A Balanced Diet Helps to Maintain Good Dental Health

03/08/13

Think about what you are eating. Did you know that every time you eat, bits of food can become lodged in-between and around your teeth. Food provides fuel for the bacteria in plaque. The bacteria produce acid, and each time you eat food containing sugars or starches, your teeth are exposed to these acids for 20 minutes or more.

These repeated acid attacks can break down the enamel surface of your teeth, leading to a cavity. If you must snack, brush your teeth or chew sugarless gum afterward.  Also if you are not having a balanced diet you may not getting enough minerals and vitamins which can affect your oral health, as well as your general health care.

Dr Dental, After Wisdom Teeth Extractions.

03/06/13

After having wisdom teeth or other teeth removed you want to make sure you taking proper care of the area to quickly heal. Make sure you follow the dentist aftercare instructions.  The dentist will go over how to take care of your extraction sites.

However here are a few Don’t.   Do not rinse the area for at least twenty-four hours after having the tooth removed.  Keep your fingers and tongue away form the extraction site.  This is tempting but it can not heal if you are poking at it.

Try to avoid eating and drinking until all numbing as worn off.  You do not want to bite your mouth or tongue.

Do not drink though straws because you want to avoid sucking. If you are a smoker, no smoking for at least a day or two. Since smoking can interfere with the healing process, and the sucking motion could dislodge the blood clot at the extraction site needed for healing.

Dr Dental, Improving Oral Healthcare of Elderly

03/02/13

Due to the increase awareness in dental and oral health care seniors are able to maintain their teeth. However the problem comes for the elderly that can not easily receive dental care.  For  many elderly oral health care becomes harder to meet.  Factors such as no dental insurance, fixed income and the inability to get to a dental office.

There are low cost dental insurance plans that an individual can buy which will help with dental cost hopefully fitting into tighter budgets.  Check to see if you have an local dentist that can make house calls for basic check ups. If the individual is living in a retirement housing or nursing home check to make sure they have on-site professional dental care.

It is very important that seniors maintain their oral health care, since poor dental care can lead to stroke, arterial disease, and pneumonia

Dr Dental, Oral and Dental Healthcare of The Elderly.

02/26/13

Are the elderly receiving proper dental care in their nursing home?  The fact is that older people in both hospital and nursing homes may not be receiving proper oral care and are at risk for dental problems.

You want to make sure that the hospital or a nursing home is responsible of providing oral health care to their patients.  That they have a high level of initial training for nurses and health care professionals regarding oral care for the elderly, otherwise the care of such elderly individuals might be sub-optimal.

Understanding your own dental health needs when buying dental insurance.

02/24/13

Understanding your own dental health needs is important in order to have the best dental care.  However it is also just as important when buying dental insurance so that you can get the best dental insurance plan that best fits your dental health needs.

When shopping for dental insurance make a check list of things you want in a dental insurance plan.  Do you want to stay with a dental provider?  If so then you should know before shopping for a dental insurance which plans they are a provider of.  There is no point in reviewing dental HMO Insurance plans or any dental discounts plans if your dentist is not a provider of those types of plans.  Since under these types of plans there is no outside network coverages or benefits.

Write down your dental care needs?  Before shopping for dental insurance have an idea what you think your dental needs are.  If you know you need crown work done, buying a dental plan that has long term waiting periods may not work out very well. Like wise if you know you need $3000.00 plus in dental work buying a plan with a $1000.00 annual max limitation may not make the best sense. Take your time read each dental insurance plan to make sure that what you are buying will best fit your dental needs.

Dr Dental, Understanding your own dental health needs

02/22/13

One of the first steps in having good oral health is in understanding your own oral and dental health needs.  Your oral health depends on many factors that can include what your eat, your habits, and your oral and overall health hygiene routine. When there are changes in your overall health status, it often results in changes in your oral health as well.

Many medicines, can reduce the amount of saliva in your mouth, which can cause dry mouth.Pregnant women also go through oral changes. These changes often includes inflammation of the gums, which is called pregnancy gingivitis. People with asthma often breathe through their mouths, particularly when sleeping. This can result in dry mouth and increased plaque formation and gingivitis.

Just as important as your health care and how it effects your oral health is your dental and health habits. beyond oral hygiene habits which hopefully you are maintaining, there are other bad habits that can hurt and damage your teeth. Such as grinding or clenching your teeth. Chewing or biting on pens and pencils or other hard object. These bad habits can chip, brake and ware down your teeth. Another bad habits that can effect your teeth, gum health and overall health would be smoking.

What your eat or drink can also effect your oral health. Drinking coffee or tea can stain your teeth. Even good foods can hurt your teeth just as oranges and apples can ware down your tooth enamel. This is not to say you can not have these types of food and drinks but to beware and informed so you can take the needed care maintaining healthy teeth and gums.  Make sure to talk to your dentist let him or her know your health and dental habits as well as any medical conditions so that your dentist can provide you with the best dental care that fits your lifestyle.

Dr Dental, Poor Dental Care is the Norm in Many Nursing Homes.

02/20/13

According to studies it is estimated that one-half to three-quarters of all nursing home residents have their own teeth into old age.  This may be because of greater dental health awareness as well as fluoridated water.

Even though this is good news that seniors today are able to keep their teeth much long, the situation has created a predicament for the residents in nursing homes as caregivers often lack the expertise or time needed to maintain good daily dental care. Poor dental care can lead to stroke, arterial disease, and pneumonia.

Check to make sure that your nursing home provides on-site professional dental care.  Make sure that the administrator believes that good dental care is important to good overall health care.

Dr Dental, The U.S. Supreme Court has issued an opinion that upholds the Affordable Health Care Act

02/08/13

The U.S. Supreme Court has issued an opinion that upholds the Affordable Health Care Act

This includes the individual mandate for coverage.  The case challenged the constitutionality of several parts of the law, including the rule that most people in the U.S. must get health coverage.   We will continue to carry out provisions of the law by thoughtfully implementing the new requirements for customers and members. We will also continue to look for ways to address increasing costs that are crippling our health care system, including: ·      Advancing our partnership with primary care physicians announced earlier this year that we believe will substantially improve quality and member health, and potentially reduce the trend in overall medical costs by as much as 20% by 2015. ·      Coordinating patient care through the use of IBM-Watson technology to promote evidence-based health care and ensure that millions of Americans receive the most effective courses of treatment.  We look forward to continuing our efforts to work with policymakers and other key stakeholders to build a health care delivery system that provides security and affordability to all Americans.

DR Dental Insurance Coverages, ADA code for a Root Canal.

02/04/13

I was told by a dentist that I should have a root canal done on a back molar.  At the time I was in the process of moving so I put off having the dental work done.   Now that tooth is starting to hurt when I eat certain foods.  I been trying to find some dental insurance that can help me have a root canal done.

The few dental insurance plans  I called on stated that they can not give me a price quote for a root canal without an ADA code.  On some of the dental plans I was told that they would only cover a root canal if the general dentist in the plan can do the service, that they do not cover specialist.  The dental plans that do cover for both general and specialist, still tell me I would need to know the ADA code.

I called the dentist office that told me a year ago about what I needed but got no help from them.  So how do I know the ADA code that I will need and I do I know if I will need to see a specialist or not?  Any advise
