Dr Dental, Orthodontic dental health insurance for adults.

01/05/16

When looking for dental insurance that offer braces for adults make sure you read each plans terms and conditions carefully.  Although there are dental insurance plans that will offer adult braces there are still many dental insurance plan that only offer Orthodontic dental services to minors.  Another thing to keep is that many dental insurance plans only offer coverages for basic metal braces.  Metal braces may be find for a child but not so much when it comes to an adult.

If you are looking for clear braces or  invisaligns  or any other specialty braces that are not covered under dental insurance then you may want to review a dental discount plan for your Orthodontic needs.  On a dental discount plan they offer dental saving off any type of braces for any age group.  Therefore a dental discount plan would save you money on your Orthodontic needs as long as there is an Orthodontic dentist in the plan that does the type of services you are looking for. It is a good idea to call the dentist and confirm they are still taking the dental plan you may be reviewing.

Knowing the dental ADA codes when shopping for dental insurance.

01/01/16

For some people shopping for dental insurance can become confusing.  They do not know if the dental services they want to have is cover under the plan they may be reviewing.   How can you make sure that you are buying a dental plan that covers the dental service you may need.

Know your ADA codes.  ADA codes are codes use by the dentist and the dental insurance company so that the insurance company knows what dental services is being provided.   So when you are shopping for dental insurance ask your dentist for the dental ADA codes that they may be quoting for you whenever possible. Also it is possible that not all the ADA codes are listed on the company fee schedule so if you do not see call the company and confirm if it covered prior to buying the plan.

Dr Dental, California Dental Discount Plans

12/29/15

In California there are many good dental discount plans that are available.  On our website we offer.  Dental discount plans though Aetna,  Careington and New Dental Choice. Dental discount plans are a good low cost dental plan option.  They do not have many of the limitations that dental insurance plans may come with.

Many of our dental discount plans start within the next business day of your on line enrollment. Which is very good for those people that are in dental pain since they can see a dentist right away.  Dental discount plans are not for everyone.  But they are a good way to reduce all your dental needs at a very affordable cost.

When deciding between dental discount plans carefully review their fee schedules.  The fee schedules show the discount prices on what you pay for each dental service listed.  You also want to make sure there is a dentist in the dental plan you want to go to.  Since there is no outside network benefits. I suggest calling the dentist listed and confirming they are still accepting the plan as well as new members.

Dr Dental, Can You Get Cost Assistance on Dental Coverage Under the ACA

12/27/15

Generally cost assistance only applies to major medical coverage and not dental plans. However if you get a marketplace plan that includes dental insurance, it will only have one premium which Premium Tax credits can be applied to. You cannot apply Tax Credits to a stand-alone dental plan.

Dr Dental Insurance, Dental Coverages and Filing Claims Forms.

12/25/15

When you have a dental insurance plan were you are dealing with the filing of claims it is important to understand the claims process.  Know how your insurance company handles claims and how the dentist your pick files out your claims.   Problems arises when you do not have a clear understanding of your dental insurance and how claims are paid.  As well as when you do not know how the dental office is going to make you pay and how they file out claims.    Many PPO plans or free choice of dentist plans state they pay out a certain percentage for preventive, basic and majors services.  However that percentage is still normally up to what the UCR or MAC rates are for dental company.

Knowing that is important and it is a good idea to submit dental services to the claims department as a quote only before any dental work is started.  That way you always know your true cost for the dental services before committing to it.

It is equally important to know how the dental office is going to file out your claim.  Do not assume that the dentist will not charge  you the full amount for the dental services.  Making you wait for your refund back from the dental office. This is a mistake often made and normally it is after the fact. Causing many people to be upset.  Ask the dentist what they expect you to pay and how before work is started.  Do they file the claims for you or do you need to file them. Knowing all this ahead of time will keep you from any unexpected billings  and from getting upset with the dental claim process.

Dr Dental, Young Children are off To A Poor Start with Dental Health.

11/20/15

Polls show children may not be receiving the dental care needed early on in life.  The report from the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health shows that most children ages 1-2 have not yet started seeing a dentist, even though most experts recommend that children begin oral health care by age 1 or when their first teeth emerge. It is critical to make sure that parents know and understand their role in preventing dental problems.

Dr Dental, Dental Insurance and Dental Bridges.

11/14/15

What you should know before buying dental insurance in order to have dental bridge or partial.  Whenever possible do not pull out teeth prior to buying dental insurance.  This is because many dental insurance plans have missing teeth clauses.  Meaning that if the teeth were missing prior to the plan effective date they will not cover for a new bridge or partial to be put in.

Some dental insurance plan will replace bridges, partials and denture but only after you had your old one in for five or more years. (Therefore they will normally ask for proof. )

If you have current missing teeth it does not mean you can not find dental insurance to help you fix  your smile.  Just read the terms and conditions carefully.  Make sure the dental insurance plan you are buying is going to cover for the dental services you want.

I also suggest not to rule out dental discount plans.  With dental discount plan preexisting is not excluded including missing teeth. So for a low monthly cost of a dental discount plan you can have some saving off getting a dental bridge without any waiting periods or exclusions.

Keeping your dental care cost low by knowing the cost of dental care.

11/12/15

People spend hours on their food shopping to make sure where to get the best prices comparing coupons to five or more stores.  However when it comes to their own dental care needs,  very few shop to make sure the getting the best cost for their dental care.  Sadly many more people continue to pay overly high prices for their dental care or worse avoid going to a dentist due to cost fears.

By finding out the cost of dental services such as office visits, x-rays, cleanings,  fillings  etc.  at a few dental office it will help empower you to seek out more affordable dental care.  If you been with your dentist for a while shop the dental office out. This is not say you have to leave but if you find that other dental offices in the area are less expensive, then talk to your dental office to see if they are willing to match cost in order to keep you as their patient.

Find out if the dental office has a website.  Many dental offices offer savings if you book your first appointment though their website. Always ask if there are any other specials or saving that they are running.  If you are paying cash see about getting a cash discount. You may also want to find a dental office that offers affordable payment plan options for the more costly dental services so that you can still afford to have any needed dental care.

Dr Dental, Buying an Affordable Dental Insurance Plans.

11/10/15

Question: I live in New Jersey I would like to be able to compare dental insurance plans to make sure I am getting the best coverage’s for the best price.  I see many dental plans that are costly but the coverage’s do not look all that good to me.

Answer: Depending on your dental care needs and what you are wanting in a dental insurance plan higher price dose not always mean better coverage’s. There are many personal factors that need to be taken into account when buying a dental insurance plan that best fits your needs.

There are also two factors to take into account with regards to affordability. First the cost of the dental insurance plan, and second the plan benefits.  You may find a really low cost dental insurance plan but the plan benefits may be not as good as buying a plan that may cost a little more.

I suggest reviewing the dental insurance and plan options we provide and calling our member services at 310-534-3444 if you should have any questions about our plans cost and benefits.

Dr Dental, How do discount dental plans work?

11/06/15

Most individual dental insurance plans require you to satisfy waiting periods and deductibles before having major and sometimes even minor restorative work done. Discount dental plans help make maintaining good oral health a lot more affordable. And, with no waiting periods or complicated coverage procedures, dental discount plans are about as simple as you can get.

How do discount dental plans work? As we become aware about our oral health, there has been a demand for affordable dental care. Discount dental plans are the newest option for those without coverage. These dental discount plans are much cheaper than traditional dental insurance, and also offer almost equal coverage for all dental work, even cosmetic procedures not covered by standard indemnity dental plans.

The catch is that dental discount plans are not really insurance at all. They work more like club memberships, where the cost of membership (your “premium”) earns a steep discount on any club service (dental work) you buy. The discount normally applies to all dental office services performed by an approved “plan” dentist, but no procedure is covered completely.

Saliva protects teeth against cavities more than we thought

11/04/15

Mucus – part of the 0.5% of saliva that is not water – contains salivary mucins, compounds that actively protect teeth from damage by the cavity-causing bacterium Streptococcus mutans, according to a new study.   Previously it was thought that salivary mucins – large glycoproteins – did little more than keep mucus in saliva slippery and elastic, contributing to its gel-like properties. But now it seems they play an active role in defending against pathogens and keeping the human microbiome healthy.

Simple saliva test may reveal deadly diseases early enough to treat them

11/02/15

The study, the most comprehensive analysis ever conducted of RNA molecules in human saliva, reveals that saliva contains many of the same disease-revealing molecules that are contained in blood. It was published online today by the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Chemistry and will be published in the journal’s January 2015 special print issue, “Molecular Diagnostics: A Revolution in Progress.”

Dr Dental, How caries treatment in the past was done

10/30/15

A large proportion of people in the countries where sucrose became widely available developed rapidly-advancing dental caries which began in the tooth enamel. For reasons that we now understand well, these individuals experienced pain, severe localized infection within relatively dense bone and then systemic illness. Suddenly, a disease which could be extremely painful and even deadly became common in children and young adults.

When the epidemic began no-one understood its cause. All that people could do at the time was treat its consequences. Treatment was by surgery, usually by extracting the tooth, and was very difficult for the surgeon (and very painful for the patient). Surgeons were not particularly admired at the time, because their work was crude, painful and often failed. A new type of surgeon, the dental surgeon, was needed. The dental profession began as a group of people who were also not very admired, but were very much needed.

Dr Dental, Who is the best a local dental care facility or a dental chain?

10/28/15

This all comes down to shopping around and doing your homework. I do not feel that one is necessary better the the other and would be unfair to make a blanked statement like that. I am sure that there are good dentist and bad dentist in both. Here are some suggestions you can do when trying to find a dentist.

1) Call the dental offices you have in your area that you may want to go to. Ask them all the general questions you may have.  This will help give you get an  idea of how they are.

2) You may want to just stop by. I have done this before. Just walk in and see what it looks like. Is it clean are the people friendly. Also talk to the people who are waiting. What better reference you can get. Ask them what they think of the dentist and the office. Most people will tell you the good and bad about their dentist.

3) You mentioned cost and not wanting to pay exorbitant amount for services. For this you may want to invest in getting either dental insurance or a dental discount plan.  Either will help you control your dental cost.

4) When you find a dentist you might want to go to,  find out what plans they participate in.  This way you can look for those plans.

5) Do not forget the power of the internet. You can do a search on the dentist to see if there has been any comments about the office or the dentist by others that went there.

6) Finding a good dentist takes time but it is worth the effort you will put into it.  Good luck to you in your search.
